Overview
Corto Maltes Amazonia Lodge in Puerto Maldonado is located on the banks of the Madre de Dios River, just 30 minutes of navigation from Puerto Maldonado, Peru’s capital of biodiversity. The lodge invites you to experience a great ecotourism-based trip in the famous Amazonian rainforest.
This lodge will be the starting point for our jungle expeditions. You will visit Lake Sandoval, home to stunning and luxuriant fauna and flora, Monkey Island, and the parrots’ clay pecking. Additionally, you will explore the Fitzcarrold boat and discover a vast array of medicinal and curative plants, including Ayahuasca.
Corto Maltes Amazonia Lodge is built on the banks of the Madre de Dios River and covers 60 hectares. It is also lined by a Quebrada (a river that flows from the depths of the jungle), which the Tambopata Candamo National Reserve protects. It is on this mysterious river that we invite you to discover the thousand and one wonders of its flora and fauna in this natural paradise.
During the walk in the jungle, you will also discover a large variety of trees and medicinal plants. The guides will be delighted to teach you all about this mysterious environment with outstanding professionalism and very particular kindness.
Corto Maltes Amazonia Lodge has 22 bungalows in total, made of exotic wood with all the needed comforts: private bathroom with permanent hot water, electricity, excellent bedding (1 double bed and one single bed), as well as a charming deck with two hammocks from where you can admire fabulous sunsets.
Common areas: Spacious restaurant, large and pleasant deck, bar, shop – all of them overlooking the river and the garden.
Food: All our meals are prepared by a French cook who combines local products with refinement and imagination. We pay very special attention to our vegetarian guests.
Full Itinerary
Upon your arrival at the Puerto Maldonado Airport, a professional guide will be waiting for you. We will go to our office to obtain the official waterway permits; meanwhile, you can visit the town's main square, a perfect place to take beautiful pictures while enjoying the stunning scenery at the confluence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers.
After a 40-minute boat ride, we will arrive at Corto Maltes in the Amazon. Upon arrival, you will be greeted with a welcome cocktail and enjoy delicious international dishes offered by the lodge. Thereafter, you will have some free time to get comfortable in your bungalows, to overlook either the river or the jungle or take a refreshing dip in our pool.
Finally, around 03:30 pm, our adventure begins. During our 3-hour trek, our guide will accompany you and introduce you to many tropical trees, medicinal plants, and the abundance of nature within the 60-hectare area belonging to the Corto Maltes Lodge. From our lookout point, you can observe toucans, macaws and other species of birds before we return to the lodge itself. Here, we will enjoy the sunset. The duration of this trek is between 2 and 3 hours.
Then, you will have the rest of the afternoon free. Before dinner, you can go on an extra tour, a nightly boat trip to the Caiman spot.
At 08:00 pm, we will have our delicious dinner. Afterwards, those who wish can sit in our reclining seats or have some fun and make friends with other travellers at the bar. Another option is to take a bath in the pool (with a bar) under the shining Amazon sky and marvel at the Cross of the South.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Early in the morning, at 05:30 am, we will go on a 20-minute trek to the parrot clay lick. Here, at least five parrot species feed on a special clay that is vital to their metabolism. It’s a truly marvellous, multicoloured spectacle!
At 08:00 am, we will have a delicious breakfast and then have some free time to explore the splendid gardens of Corto Maltes Amazonia. There are dozens of varieties of exotic plants and flowering trees waiting for you to discover them!
Afterwards, around 10:30 am, we start navigating the Madre de Dios River. This time, it’s an expedition destined for Monkey Island, where we can find many different species of interesting and entertaining animals living in freedom. Next, we embark on a 30-minute boat ride as we enter the territory of the Tambopata-Candamo National Reserve. We will trek for around 5 km through the dense tropical rainforest, observing many giant trees, snakes, monkeys, birds, and sometimes even the elusive jaguar!
The trek’s destination is Heavenly Sandoval Lake. Numerous animal species share this privileged setting: birds (in particular Hoatzins, Kingfishers, and Cormorants) and various monkey species (Squirrel monkeys, Howler monkeys, Capuchin monkeys). At the lake itself, we can enjoy the spectacle of Giant River Otters, Black Caimans, and Piranhas (sometimes we can even observe Anacondas in areas covered by reeds). Also, the habitat of the giant Arapaima, a fish that can grow over 2.5 meters in length and weigh up to 200 kg. Travelling by canoe, you will see a spectacular, unforgettable sunset on the lake. On our return to the river, we might be able to spot some nocturnal animals as well.
After all these great experiences and an active day in the jungle, our bodies will demand some rest and food. Therefore, we will enjoy the exotic tastes of our meals, especially our desserts, around 08:00 pm. If you still have energy left, you can share some moments of music and conversation in the bar whilst having a cocktail, or enjoy the sounds of the surrounding rainforest from your hammock. After a long day full of activity, you will enjoy the comfort of your bungalow hammocks! You can also recover with a massage by one of the qualified masseurs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
On the morning of our third day, we will have a delicious breakfast at 08:00 am, followed by some free time to bathe in the pool or explore our shop, where you can find exclusive Amazon handicrafts and jewellery.
At 10:00 am, we will follow the river for approximately 1.5 hours to visit a native community. Occasionally, we can see monkeys, river turtles, caimans and various birds in the dense vegetation of the riverbanks. We will also see some medicinal plants, such as Sangre de Grado, Oje, and Capirona.
The Project for the Rescue of Cultural Values supports the local native community of Palma Real. It is the biggest one with approximately 200 families of the Eseeja tribe. Two families working on the project on Gamitada Island will introduce us to the cultural values of their ancestors, their language, customs, garments, and dances. In an era when globalisation rapidly changes traditional societies, this presents a unique opportunity to connect directly with this tribe of ancient warriors and hunters and to support them economically by purchasing their handmade products.
We will be circumnavigating Gamatida Island around 01:00 pm, occasionally seeing animals that escape from human presence. Afterwards, we will visit a Chakra (a local term for a farm). We will learn about a variety of tropical fruits and other local products (Cocoa, bananas, coffee, and cocona) and then have lunch featuring a typical Amazon dish. The Chacarero (farmer) will also let us taste some of the fruits that we will later transfer to the city of Puerto Maldonado for consumption.
Upon our return to the lodge, you will surely enjoy a bath in our swimming pool – maybe even with a cocktail that might also serve as an aperitif for dinner.
Dinner is served around 08:00 pm. Afterwards, you can retire to our bar to enjoy some tropical cocktails, relax in our reclined seats at the central terrace, or take a bath in the pool underneath the shining Amazon sky.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, it's time to say goodbye to the staff and the beautiful setting of Corto Maltes Amazonia Lodge. Your guide will accompany you on your way back to Puerto Maldonado. We will pass by our office to collect any left baggage. Next, we will visit the local market to showcase some of Amazon's local agricultural products, particularly its fruits. Afterwards, our staff will accompany you to the airport, hoping that your stay was as pleasant for you as it was for us to show you this beautiful corner of Peru.

What Our Clients Say
Excellent rating
Based on 94 reviewsVerified Great experience to see many sites in Peru! A big thanks to Leo for a wonderfully planned trip. There was always a driver waiting for us when we landed - after some long days it helps to not have to worry about one more thing! Leo made many of the arrangements for us in Arequipa, Puno, Cusco, Ollantaytambo, and Lima. Hotels were good to great - their staff always friendly and ready to help. Leo arranged for our guides and one in particular, Alex, proved to be an outstanding guide in Sacred Valley. Alex's English was perfect, he knew his history and sites extremely well, and did a great job in guiding the 6 of us on our a daylong hike up the Inca trail. And Leo always had wonderful recommendations for restaurants and other things to do. Thank you! Roxane BVerified A Flawlessly Organized and Unforgettable Peru Adventure My sister recently organized our trip to Peru with Roland, and it was absolutely fantastic. He dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s, making the whole experience seamless. The trip was wonderfully diverse, with excursions throughout Peru that gave us an incredible apperçu of the country and its sites. Highly recommended! Renee BVerified No podes ir a Río sin alguna vez parar sobre Copacabana! Mortal.. Estuve en Rio frente al mar en Copacabana. Me encanto! Gente durante todo el día! Y si te animas visita la Rozhina con un local, obvio! Go03529326781Verified Personalized adventure of a lifetime We took a personalized trip to Cusco, Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu with Green Peru Adventures. Leo, the owner of Green Peru Adventures, listened to all my ideas and planned an excellent trip for us! We had an amazing and safe driver, Willie, to take us on all the scheduled tours throughout Cusco and the Sacred Valley. He was there, on time, and got us safely to all our destinations with no problems. Our tour guide, Freddie, was knowledgeable, entertaining, patient, and just great to hang around with! Hiram was an excellent tour guide for our Machu Picchu adventure! He had so much knowledge about all the ins and outs of the Citadel and provided us with interesting stories and life during Incan times. Really, this great trip could not have been successful without the great design from Leo, the owner of Green Peru Adventures. Thank you so much for making this once in a lifetime trip so incredible! krwalker77Verified Overall good - but mixed experience with sub-contractors Booked the 2-day tour from Puno to Arequipa via Colca Canyon. Unfortunately Green Peru Adventures is just an Agent and not actually delivering the service - so having them one step removed added to the difficulties. We were not informed that one provider (Nativa Express) would be coordinating the first half day, and then we would be handed over to Giardino Tours for the remaining day and a half. Nativa Express were appalling. They were half hour late for pickup - which ordinarily is fine but there was no communication. Our “Guide” didn’t talk to us the whole journey until we were offloaded at a remote ‘Crossroads (like a roadhouse) and told we had to wait for another driver. First we’d heard of this!!! Other driver was running late but our Nativa Guide didn’t have their number! After half hour she took off in another van leaving us in the hands of the Nativa bus driver. However the moment she was out of sight he drove off leaving us abandoned in the middle of nowhere! We were to be tranferred to Giardino Tours, and at this point the only saving grace was another driver and guide from that company reaching out and assuring us that they’d been in contact with our Giardino guide and exactly how long the would be. From then on, our tour was amazing!! 5-stars to Guardino Tours!! But next time we will book with them directly. baafreoVerified Cusco, Valle sagrado, Machu Picchu, montaña de colores Roland (Leo) hizo de nuestro viaje a Cusco una experiencia placentera. G- PVerified Great experience! My husband and I just came back from our trip to Peru, and we are very satisfied with the services provided by Green Peru Adventures. The Green Peru Adventures staff was professional since the beginning. They were well organized, always punctual, helpful, and friendly. They created a customized package for us and another couple (friends of ours) that included all the activities and private tours that we wanted to experience while we were in Peru. The staff answered all our questions in a timely manner through What’s App, and was very accommodating to our requests. There was an internal issue with the hotel that we had first booked, but Roland, our main point of contact, was proactive and fixed everything before we got there. Alex and Favio, our tour guides in Cusco and Machu Picchu, respectively, were very nice and knowledgeable. Julio, our driver, was always punctual and drove us safely to all our destinations. Thank you, Green Peru Adventures! We had a great experience in Peru thanks to your team. We would use your services again in the future, and recommend to our friends and family <3. Xochitl BVerified Feeling comfortable I'm from the UK, I was very apprehensive about just arriving in Peru on my own and booking a tour with a tour company that I know nothing about. Being in the middle of the desert in Peru with a complete stranger is quite daunting. However, Leo (Roland) was very helpful, always available via whatsapp to answer questions and responding to my requests for confirmation etc. I booked a tour from Puno to Arequipa with a one night stay in Chivay for Colca canyon. Everything was very smooth, I felt comfortable straight away. Very professional tour guide and driver, nice new buses to travel in. Nice accomodation etc. I would definately use again. I usually like more than 5 reviews before I use a company, but this one I recommend, I'm not biased, I just feel the need to write a good review. Mjohnson51Verified Two day tour Colca Canyon from Puno to Arequipa We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 day tour of the Colca Canyon from Puno with Giardino Tours/Green Peru Adventures. We we were picked up in Puno, stayed overnight close to Chivay, toured the Colca Canyon and surrounding area the next day and were driven on to Arequipa after that. Our guide Elar (Giardino Tours) was excellent. He was very knowledgeable, and thoughtful and accommodating in planning our itinerary. We made many interesting stops along the way over the 2 days. It was a great way to see the Canyon and travel between Puno and Arequipa.
