Corto Maltes Amazonia Lodge in Puerto Maldonado is located on the banks of the river Madre de Dios, hardly 30 minutes navigation from Puerto Maldonado, Peru’s capital of biodiversity. The lodge invites you to experience a great trip, based on ecotourism, in the famous Amazonian rainforest.

This lodge will be the starting point of our expeditions through the jungle. You will go to discover Lake Sandoval, whose fauna and flora are stunning and luxuriant, the Monkey Island, the parrots’ clay pecking, the Fitzcarrold boat, as well as a huge diversity of medicinal and curative plants such as Ayahuasca.

Corto Maltes Amazonia Lodge is built on the banks of the Madre de Dios River and stretches on a surface of 60 hectares. It is also lined with a Quebrada (a river coming from the depths of the jungle) which is protected by the Tambopata Candamo National Reserve. It is on this mysterious river that we want to invite you to discover the thousand and one wonders of flora and fauna of this natural paradise.
During the walk in the jungle, you will also discover a large variety of trees and medicinal plants. The guides will be delighted to teach you all about this mysterious environment with great professionalism and very particular kindness.

Corto Maltes Amazonia Lodge has 22 bungalows in total, made of exotic wood with all needed comfort: private bathroom with permanent hot water, electricity, excellent bedding (1 double bed and 1 single bed), as well as a very pleasant deck with two hammocks from where you can admire fabulous sunsets.
Common areas: Spacious restaurant, large and pleasant deck, bar, shop – all of them overlooking the river and the garden.
Food: All our meals are prepared by a French cook who combines local products with refinement and imagination. Very special attention is given to our vegetarian guests.

Itinerary

Day 1

Your day begins with a friendly reception at the Padre Almirez International Airport in Puerto Maldonado, where your professional guide will wait for you. He will accompany you during your whole stay. From there we will go to our office to obtain the official waterway permits (you can also guard luggage you won’t need during your stay). Meanwhile, you can visit the town’s main square and also take some photos of the beautiful scenery overlooking the confluence of the rivers Madre de Dios and Tambopata from Grau Square.

Embarkation will be at the Capitania port, from where we will go to our lodge, navigating approximately 40 minutes on the Madre de Dios River in a typical Amazonian boat.

Arriving at the Corto Maltes Amazonia Lodge, we will have a welcome cocktail. Afterwards, you will be handed over the keys to your bungalow and we will have lunch. The kitchen of our lodge stands out for a beautiful presentation and exquisite taste of the dishes, prepared by our French chef. After that, you will have some free time to get comfortable in your bungalow or to take a refreshing dip in our pool.

At 03:30 pm it’s time to have some first contact with the jungle. On this 3-hour trek, you will see a large variety of tropical trees, medicinal plants, insects, butterflies, and other animals. Upon our return, we will make a small stop at a breathtaking lookout. Here, you can observe toucans, macaws, and other species of birds for sunset.

Returning to the lodge, you can take a refreshing dip in the pool or have an exotic cocktail in our terrace bar. You could also watch the sunset in the relaxing tranquillity of palm and mango trees at our port.

At 07:00 pm before dinner, we will go on a nightly boat trip – a little safari trying to spot the white caiman (caiman crocodilus) that lives on the river banks.

At 08:00 pm we will have our delicious dinner. Afterwards, those who wish can have some talk in our reclining seats or have some fun and make friends with other travellers at the bar. Another option is to take a bath in the pool (with a bar) under the shining Amazon sky and marvel at the Cross of the South.

Day 2

Early in the morning, at 05:30 am, we will go on a 20-minute trek until we arrive at the parrot clay lick. Here, a minimum of five different parrot species feed themselves on a special clay which is vital for their metabolism. It’s a truly marvellous, multicoloured spectacle!

At 08:00 am, we will have a delicious breakfast and then have some free time to explore the splendid gardens of Corto Maltes Amazonia. There are dozens of varieties of exotic plants and flowering trees waiting for you to discover them!

Afterwards, around 10:30 am, we start navigating the Madre de Dios River. This time it’s an expedition destined for Monkey Island where we can find many different species of interesting and entertaining animals, living in freedom. Following we do another boat ride of 30 minutes while we enter the territory of the Tambopata- Candamo National Reserve. We will trek around 5 km through the dense vegetation of the tropical rainforest and observe many giant trees, snakes, monkeys, birds, and sometimes even the elusive jaguar!

The trek’s destination is Heavenly Sandoval Lake. Its’ privileged setting is shared by numerous species of animals: birds (in particular Hoatzins, Kingfisher and Cormorants) and different species of monkeys (Squirrel monkeys, Howler monkeys, Capuchin monkeys). At the lake itself, we can enjoy the spectacle of Giant River Otters, Black Caimans, and Piranhas (sometimes we can even observe Anacondas in the areas covered by reed). This is also the habitat of the giant Arapaima, a fish of more than 2,5 meters, weighing about +200 kg. Travelling by canoe, the sunset in the lake will be a spectacular, unforgettable sight. On our return to the river, we might be able to spot some nocturnal animals as well.

After all these great experiences and an active day in the jungle, our body will demand some rest and food. Therefore we will enjoy the exotic tastes of our meals, especially our desserts, around 08:00 pm. If you still have energy left, you can share some moments of music and conversation in the bar whilst having a cocktail or enjoy the sounds of the rainforest surrounding you from your hammock. After a long day full of activity you will enjoy the comfort of your bungalow hammocks! You can also recover with a massage by one of the qualified masseurs.

Day 3

After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to the staff and the beautiful setting of Corto Maltes Amazonia Lodge. Your guide will accompany you on your way back to Puerto Maldonado. We will pass by our office to recollect any left baggage. Following that, we will visit the local market to show you some local agricultural, especially fruits of the Amazon. Afterwards, our staff will accompany you to the airport, hoping that your stay was as pleasant for you as it was for us to show you this beautiful corner of Peru.
