The Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain is a few colourful mountain ranges in the Peruvian Andes, near Cusco. It is famous for its natural rainbow stripes formed by layers of different minerals. And several of them,
The Palcolyo Rainbow Mountain tour offers us more options, such as a unique stone forest (rock formations) near the viewpoint, beautiful views of the Andes, and large herds of alpacas and llamas.
Even at a pretty high altitude (4,900m/~16,000ft), the hike is shorter, easier, and less crowded.
Full Itinerary
We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:30 am. Our private transportation will take you south of Cusco, heading towards Checacupe on the way to Puno, taking the road on the right side of the valley towards Pitumarca.
The estimated travel time is 3 hours. Once there, we will continue on a dirt road. We are going to start our hike in about 1 hour; we will have the opportunity to see a few colourful mountains and a stone forest (approx. 1.5 km). The Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain is about 4,900 meters (≈16,076 ft) above sea level. We will spend 1 Hour more exploring all these places. After the visit, we will return along the same road, observing numerous Lama and Alpaca herds. After lunch, we’ll return to Cusco in our Private vehicle. Our return to Cusco will be approximately at 4:00 pm.
The hike to Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain is not that challenging. But it will take a full day to complete the adventure, and you will be at a high elevation (above 14,000ft) the entire hike. Make sure you are acclimatised to the altitude before you embark on this adventure! It is a good idea to take a day or two to acclimatise and to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the hike.
