Pallay Punchu is a spectacular, rainbow-coloured mountain in the Peruvian Andes, located in the Cusco region near the town of Layo. It became famous around 2020 when photos of its unusual colours went viral online.

The mountain has natural mineral layers that create bright stripes of red, pink, yellow, green, and white. These colours come from minerals like clay, quartz sand, and iron compounds in the rock.

“Pallay Punchu” comes from the Quechua language and roughly means “woven poncho” or “decorated poncho.”
The sharp ridges and colourful stripes resemble the patterns of traditional Andean ponchos.

Located in the district of Pomacanchis, at 4,163 m.a.s.l., The shepherds of the nearby communities also know it as Llamapukara: “they are not horns; they say they are the little ears of a llama that is alert to the presence of outsiders. “The fortress or shrine is well preserved, where there are stairs, a plaza, ceremonial enclosures and more.

Originally built by the Canas culture (pre-Inca civilisation) and later incorporated and expanded by the Inca Empire in the 15th century. Despite the name “fortress,” archaeologists believe it likely served ceremonial and religious purposes, possibly dedicated to mountain worship (apus).

Its strategic position also suggests it may have had defensive value.

The Colca Valley is a colourful Andean valley with many small towns founded during the Spanish colonial times. where the Collaguas and Cabanas peoples still live, maintaining ancestral traditions and continuing to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces.
