Overview

From Cusco to Puno we can find one of the most amazing roads, going from the Andean Valley up to the ”Alti Plano” (high plateau) where Lake Titicaca is located. Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the World at 3856 m.a.s.l. Its shores and islands, such as Amantani and Taquile, are home to the Aymaras and Quechuas, who are amongst Peru’s oldest people, predating the Incas by a thousand years.

Full Itinerary

At 06:15 am, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and transfer you to the private bus station, taking the “Wonder Peru Tourist Bus” to Puno. The tourist bus will be fully equipped with services and a professional English-speaking guide who will inform you about the history and traditions of the natives. For that, we will make some stops along the way at Andahuaylillas (the Sistine Chapel of South America), Rhachi and Puka Pukara (entrance to the 3 sites is not included = a total US$ 16).
We include a lunch buffet in Sicuani and afterwards stop at La Raya, a spectacular viewpoint at 4338 m.a.s.l. on the border between Cusco and Puno.
You will arrive at Puno around 05:00 pm, where we transfer you to the Hotel Imperial where you will have accommodation in a Double Room with a private bathroom and breakfast.
At 07:00 pm there is an orientation briefing for the next day’s tour.

We will pick you up early at 07:15 am from the Hotel Imperial and then take you to the local city port. From here, you will be shipped to the floating Uros Islands and then to Amantani Island, where you can watch the pre-Inca temples dedicated to the fertility of the earth (Pachamama and Pachatata).

Located 35 minutes by boat from the port of Puno, the Uros Islands comprise a group of islands mostly made of reed which is also used to make houses and boats. The inhabitants of the Uros Islands are very friendly people who are cordial with visitors.

Amantani, located 36 km. from the port of Puno (three hours by boat), is an island composed of eight communities engaged in the agriculture of corn and quinoa, as well as crafts that are representative of their culture. During this afternoon, you will hike to the top of the island called Pachatata, from where you will have breathtaking views and experience the very unique sunset with a bright colourful view.
After descending, your host family will receive you with a typical delicious dinner. You will be dressed up in the local costumes and enjoy a nice party with its typical local dance while being accompanied by your host family and the rest of the community.

After having breakfast with your host family, you will be brought to the local harbour where we take a short boat ride to the shores of Taquile Island. From here, we will start to hike to the main square, observing the people who are world-famous for their intricate and fascinating weavings and community work. Amongst men, it is very easy to identify who is married, single or dating a female – just by the colours of their hat! Also, you will get to know who is important on the island just by the way of what items they wear. You will have lunch in one of the community restaurants and then descend to the local port to return to Puno. Arriving to Puno at 03:00 to 04:00 pm in the afternoon, we transfer you to the hotel in preparation to take a direct night bus to Cusco at 09:00 pm, arriving in Cusco around 05:00 to 06:00 am the next morning.

Note: Please do not give candies or lollies to the kids on the islands! They appreciate oranges and other fruits as it is impossible to grow them on the islands in these altitudes and it will conserve their teeth and the environment.
