This especial Colca Canyon program involves a journey throughout the Altiplano leaving from the city Arequipa to the kingdom of the condors in the Colca valley than to the Altiplano again to the city of Puno. During this trip you will be able to see great Andean scenery and gorgeous views of the volcanoes of Arequipa adorned by Alpacas and vicu as in the foreground.

At the Colca Canyon region you will visit some small communities located on route and also the famous lookout point known as Cruz del Condor, from where it is possible to see the majestic flight of the Andean Condor and an amazing view of the Colca River. On this journey we include the visit to the best hot springs of Peru, a fantastic natural place where you can relax after exploring the great Colca Canyon.


Day 1

Arequipa – Chivay

A private bus picks you up from your hotel around 7.30 am. The bus takes you on the road to Yura heading towards the Valley of the Colca 160 km to chivay. You will travel along this road, for 4 hours towards your first night’s destination. The 4 hours trip is not direct, but does go through some of the local area’s most important places. The first stop will be at the National Reserve of Aguada Blanca and Salinas, a place where you can observe the famous vicuñas and the other side of the volcanoes of Arequipa as Misti, Chachani and PichuPichu.
before approaching the National Reserve of “Pampa Cañahuas”, where our transportation will make a short stop to observe the wild Vicuñas (one of the 4 types of American camels) in its natural habitat. At this point we will be about 3,400 meters above sea level. Moving on we will arrive to “Pata Wasi” (Pata=high Wasi=home), an Andean community at the opposite border of the reserve.

we will stop at the restaurant El Chino, where you can use the bathrooms, drink a coca tea, to prevent altitude sickness from where you can appreciate the ”stone wood” formations.

Continuing on the road we will pass “Tocra”, a high plain at more than 4,500 meters, where we will observe lakes with migrant birds and get pictures of the “Antiplano” with its Llamas and Guanacos. The highest point of our tour will be “Pata Pampa” (Pata=high, Pampa=land) located at 4,820 meters, where we’ll observe the volcanoes Ampato, Sabancaya, Hualca-Hualca, Mismi (the source of the Amazon River), and the “Cordillera de Chila”. When we are getting close to the town of Chivay (3,651 meters) we will start to wonder at the spectacular multicolor view of the terraces of the Colca valley.

You have some free time after lunch to visit the market of Chivay, than we will ride to the hotel Mamyachi (if you go to Colca lodge hotel after lunch and enjoy its hot pool, coordinate with the local guide for the time to pick you up the second day for the rest of the tour)

You will have time to relax before joining a short walk to the Hot springs, 30 minutes from hotel. this hots springs are one of the best hot springs in Peru, you can enjoy the warm natural water, (35 °C / 95 ºF), a nice pool outdoors surrounded by huge mountains and if you are lucky you can see some Condors returning to their nests. After sunset, we will return to the hotel, where you can order your dinner.

Day 2

Chivay – Puno

We will have our breakfast very early in the morning and leave to the famous “Cruz del Condor” point. Arrive to “Cruz del Condor” and time enough to have an enjoyable view of the deep of the Canyon and if the weather permits; the majestic flight of the Condors.
After a coordinated time, our guide will take you for a short walk near the Canyon (1 hour aprox.) On the way back to Chivay we’re going to visit the traditional village of Pinchollo and the “Antahuilque viewpoint”, where wonderful 1,500 year old terraces, constructed by the Collaguas, a culture well before the Incas’ time, can be observed. We also will make a stop at the look-out point of “Choquetico” with its hanging tombs “Tumbas colgantes“, and take a look to the litomaqueta, a model of the canyon terraces carved in a rock. We will continue visiting Maca, an Andean community that experienced an earthquake in November of 1991 and the village of Yanque with the most beautiful church in the valley, we will arrive in Chivay, where youll have lunch and after that, you will be transfer by your tour guide to board a tourist bus 4M xpress in direction to Puno. The bus service is first class with a professional tour guide on board.

Crossing by amazing sceneries of the Altiplano leaving behind the gorgeous scenery of the Colca Canyon.
Afterwards we will continue ascending a dirt road till we reach the highest point of our trip, The Lookout Point of the Andes” (4,910m. /15,748 Ft). At the very top, we will get off of the bus for a few minutes to observe the landscape, with the volcanoes of Ubinas in the background including Mismi, Misti, Chachani, Sabancaya (active) and Ampato.

Along this paved road we will drive through small towns, as well as a beautiful lagoon called Lagunillas, where trout farms can be seen and also Andean flamingos along with many other Andean birds feeding on the shores. Following an ascending road we will reach the zone of Viscachani, where will stop to stretch our legs, use the bathroom if needed and drink a typical coca tea or coffee at the local restaurant.
Later on we will drive true the national reserves of the Peruvian Altiplano to the main city of Puno in the shorts of the majestic Titikaca Lake.

Note: please do not give candies or lollies to the kids that you might meet the the road or kids who take care of the lama and alpacas.

They really appreciate oranges and other fruit as it is impossible to grow on these altitudes and it will save their teeth and their environment.
