Program Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes
We pick you up from your hotel at 4:00 am and transfer you to Ollantaytambo train station.
Passing by a few small, colourful towns like Chinchero, Urubamba, Calca, etc. we finally arrive at Ollantaytambo, where we will have a few minutes to have a coffee before boarding the train, at 7.20 am. Then experience an incredible 2 hour journey on a train with panoramic windows which will take you along the Sacred River of the Incas descending from high valley down to the cloud forest, at 2000 m. You will notice the landscape changing dramatically in front of your eyes, where you will be able to see the tropical mountain ending in snow carpet and the small waterfalls shimmering on the hills, forming small rivers that flow down to converge at the Sacred River. After these spectacular natural views you will arrive at Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town) where the warm atmosphere will welcome you with a few typical jungle sounds.
Green Peru adventures staff and a tour guide will be waiting with your name at the gate of the train station in Aguas Calientes and take you to your Hostel. In the afternoon you will have plenty of free time, the guide will give you a few tips about what to do or visit, but we do recommend, the Botanical garden, new Machu Picchu museum or taking a walk along the train line to Mandor waterfall where there is also a botanic garden with native plants of the area (10 soles entrance fee).
If you are looking for extreme adventure and you do not suffer from vertigo, climb Putucusi Mountain and you will have an alternative view of Machu Picchu (aprox.3hrs, with a steep gradient including ladders up to 20m each, not recommended in rainy season).
Please be at 7:00 pm at your hotel, the tour guide will come to give you a briefing for the next day's tour.
Accommodation: Royal inti inn or similar.

Day 2: Machu Picchu
The day you were waiting for! Wake up early for breakfast starting our day by climbing or taking the bus up to the entrance of the famous Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu, the “Lost City of the Incas.” Avoiding the crowds, you will be one of the first visitors of the day. Your bilingual tour guide will take you around the vast ruins for about 2.5 hrs, comprehensively explaining its historical significance and place in the Inca Empire. After this you have some free time to wander around. Machu Picchu is the best known of the Inca ruins, as it is recognized worldwide, yet it is not mentioned in any of the writings of the Spanish Conquistadors. It is believed to have been constructed around the mid-15th century and was “rediscovered” by American historian Hiram Bingham in 1911. The guided tour of this fascinating place is an unforgettable experience. Visit the Main Square, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Circular Towers, the Sacred Sun Dial and Burial Grounds. After the excursion you can hike up the mountain behind Machu Picchu “ Huayna Picchu “ where you will have stunning views over the whole complex! However there are only 400 persons per day allowed, therefore you must book in advance. This can be done when booking your tour and has a cost of $10 plus. Optional unguided walks include Inti Punko, the “SUN GATE” the traditional end of the Inca Trail, duration 45 mins and the Inca Bridge, duration 1 hr. Otherwise simply relax and take in the awe inspiring atmosphere. After your free time you can walk down to the town of Aguas Calientes for a late lunch or a dip in the hot springs (not included). In the afternoon you take the train back.
A frequent bus service takes visitors back to Aguas Calientes, where you will catch the train to Ollantaytambo (sometimes subject to Peru Rail availability) and then the tourist bus on to Cusco.
Take the bus to Aguas Calientes anytime, if you prefer to walk down through the
jungle it will take you roughly 45 minutes. The train to return to
Ollantaytambo is in the late afternoon and we recommend you to do that, so you can have
more available time. (If you want to comeback early afternoon please let us know),
we provide transfer from Ollanyatambo to Cusco.
